The Fairchild-Republic A-10 Thunderbolt II is a single-seat, twin-engine jet aircraft designed to provide close air support (CAS) of ground forces by attacking tanks, armored vehicles, and other ground targets. As a secondary mission, it provides airborne forward air control, guiding other attack aircraft against ground targets. It is the first US Air Force aircraft designed exclusively for close air support (CAS) of ground forces. The official nickname comes from the P-47 Thunderbolt of World War II, a plane that was particularly effective at the CAS mission. However, the A-10 is more commonly known as Warthog or simply Hog. In the USAF inventory, the same airframe is also designated OA-10 when used primarily in a forward air control role.

The A-10 is literally built around its 30-mm GE GAU-8 Avenger seven barrel cannon, the most powerful gun ever fitted to an aircraft of this class. It was designed for high-survivability with a titanium cover surrounding both the cockpit, ammunition and fuel tank. The "Warthog" first flew from Davis Monthan AB in 1975 and was designed to confront the threat of massed Soviet armour pouring into Western Europe. To do this job, it was designed to be extremely hard to kill, able to carry a wide variety of air-to ground weapons and had to be able to fly with minimal support and maintenance. The pilot sits in a titanium armoured "bathtub" and the fuselage can take hits from armour-piercing and high-explosive shells up to 23mm calibre. Its main weapon is the GAU-8 30mm cannon. This fires foot-long shells that weigh a pound each at a rate of 3900 depleted uranium or high explosive rounds a minute, just one of which would destroy most tanks. Also, the A-10 can use Hellfire and Maverick missiles as well various bombs, guided or otherwise. The song I used is "Sonne" by Rammstein.

Video is of the former UK-based Republic P-47 "No Guts No Glory" at the 50th Anniversary celebration of the Planes of Fame Museum at Chino, California in Jan., 2007. This aircraft had JUST been sold to a new USA owner by Provenance Fighter Sales. This was a very nice and generous gesture flying "No Guts" for a public flight display. This is typical of the Southern California warbird scene. We locals are very lucky here in SoCal USA! If you will notice, the idle of the P&W R-2800 engine sounds a little irregular. At the beginning of the startup, it was discovered that the engine had an "oil lock." That means that excess quantities of engine oil had seeped into the lower cylinders. The engine required "pulling through" by the ground crew, i.e. manually rotating the prop to clear some of the trapped oil in the cylinders. I think some of the spark plugs were still fouled during the taxi sequence, resulting in the irregular idle. Steve Hinton obviously cleared the fouling during engine run-up just prior to takeoff.

The Thunderbolt was one of the three most important American fighters produced during the war and saw extensive service with the United States Army Air Force before its comparatively late introduction into RAF operational service in 1944. This big and strongly built fighter bomber, with its good low level performance and long range made an ideal replacement for the RAF's Hurricane fighter bombers operating over Burma. The RAF only used the Thunderbolt against the Japanese in South East Asia Command. By 1944 air/ground co-operation had been successfully developed into a powerful tactical tool and RAF Thunderbolts in Burma quickly adopted 'cab rank' patrols available to attack any enemy ground target holding up the Allied advance. Directed by ground visual control posts, the Thunderbolts, with their heavy gun armament and 500lb bombs, created havoc amongst Japanese troop concentrations and their supply lines. During the air battles leading to the re-capture of Rangoon, RAF Thunderbolts flew fighter escort missions with RAF Liberator bombers. By the end of 1945 RAF Thunderbolt squadrons were re equipping with Hawker Tempest Iis but some units were sent to Batavia in an attempt to re-introduce Dutch colonial rule. Whilst there they undertook a number of bombing missions against Indonesian guerrillas and rebel airfields.
