"Finally, let me speak directly to all of the people of Burma. Your dream of democracy is not forgotten, nor is it yours to bear alone. America stands with you. We remain with you as your dedicated partner and we will work to hasten the coming of days when you will once again live in freedom, peace and prosperity." (U.S. Department of State Secretary Condoleezza Rice, May 29th 2006)

The Myanmar ruling military has hinted that it might release pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi in six months time. But critics argue the words are just empty rhetoric. Al Jazeera's Hannah Belcher reports.

The struggle for democracy and human rights in Burma is a struggle for life and dignity. It is a struggle that encompasses our political, social and economic aspirations. The people of my country want the two freedoms that spell security: freedom from want and freedom from fear. (Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, 1991 Nobel Peace Prize Laureate)

This is the joint MTV and Burma Campaign Video for Aung San Suu Kyi. I hope it's ok to post it... I guess the more people making it known, the better! Aung San Suu Kyi remains under house arrest since 30th May 2003, despite winning a landslide 82% of the votes in the election held in 1990. I think I saw this film at the Human Rights Film Festival last year, it really looks familiar! But it's very powerful nonetheless

U.S. Campaign http://www.uscampaignforburma.org/ UK Campaign http://www.burmacampaign.org.uk/aungsansuukyi.php Burma Campaign http://www.burmacampaign.org.uk/mtvaction.html National League for Democracy (NLD) Aung San Suu Kyi I am very humbly requesting any fellow youtubers out there if they will take it upon themselves to make their own video to continue to increase awareness, to share it with everyone, because I truly believe there is strength in numbers. It doesn't have to be anything fancy. It can be short and simple. Knowing she's been imprisoned for years, and for no reason It's cruel and pitiful that she stay confined when she knew her husband was very ill. She was not able to be by his side when he died of cancer, but I know in my heart they were both in each other's thoughts and souls during Michael's last days of life. I'm sure they both were in one another's minds and hearts every single day. Write a school paper on her if you are allowed to pick the person. To any teachers out there -- Please have one day of awareness, teaching your students about what democracy is, how precious freedoms are. Introduce your students to Aung San Suu Kyi. Have the students write letters for her. She represents freedom, democracy, elegance and grace. Fight the good fight, and this is one of those good "fights". Aung San Suu Kyi is about 62 years old now. She's done absolutely nothing wrong. She is a graceful, humble, decent caring human There are no regular visiting hours for her. Than Shwe is Burma's leader of one of the world's most BRUTAL regimes. Than Shwe should not be in power. He lost the election. Perhaps the person that replaces him will show the world what a great leader is by freeing Suu Kyi, and all of the political prisoners. This will be a man history will look back on with fondness, a leader the people of Myanmar (and the world) will respect. Last month she celebrated her birthday, isolated. I can't help but think about her sons, how they worry about her and hurt for her. This is their mother, and she's been unjustly imprisoned, for years. I think about if that were my mother or my father, wrongfully imprisoned.

He also decries Burma's military regime for recruiting more child soldiers than any other country in the world, destroying 3,000 villages in eastern Burma, and forcing 1.5 million refugees to flee. He appeals to viewers to join two organizations: The Human Rights Action Center www.humanrightsactioncenter.org U.S. Campaign for Burma www.uscampaignforburma.org

Free Burma. Aung San Suu Kyi, born 19 June 1945 in Yangon (Rangoon), is a pro-democracy activist and leader of the National League for Democracy in Myanmar (Burma), and a noted prisoner of conscience and advocate of nonviolent resistance. Aung San Suu Kyi was the third child in her family. Her name "Aung San" derives from her father, "Kyi" from her mother and "Suu" from her grandmother.[6] A Buddhist, Suu Kyi won the Rafto Prize and the Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought in 1990 and the Nobel Peace Prize in 1991. In 1992 she was awarded the prestigious Jawaharlal Nehru peace prize by the Government of India for her peaceful and non-violent struggle under a military dictatorship. She is currently under detention, with the Myanmar government repeatedly extending her detention. According to the results of the 1990 general election, Suu Kyi earned the right to be Prime Minister, as leader of the winning National League for Democracy party, but her detention by the military junta prevented her from assuming that role. She is frequently called Daw Aung San Suu Kyi; Daw is not part of her name, but an honorific similar to madam for older, revered women, literally meaning "aunt". Strictly speaking, she has only the one name, though it is acceptable to refer to her as "Ms. Suu Kyi" or Dr. Suu Kyi, since those syllables serve to distinguish her from her father, General Aung San.

Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, Noble Peace Laureate and detained Burmese pro-democracy leader has accepted food supplies following refusal for the past month after the military junta partially gave into her demands. "She has agreed to accept food supplies again after the regime partially met her demands," Nyan Win the National League for Democracy spokesperson told Mizzima. She had been refusing food supplies since August 15 to force the junta to accept her demands. Daw Aung San Suu Kyi was not allowed to receive foreign magazines and letters from her family. The junta also imposed restrictions on the movement of her aide, Khin Khin Win, and her daughter, Win Pa Pa. Suu Kyi has been given many humanitarian awards by different nations including the Nobel Peace Prize. But she was never allowed to receive the awards. The awards were received by her sons, Alexander and Kim, on her behalf. Kyi Win, Suu Kyi's personal lawyer who met her last week, said the junta has agreed to allow her to receive letters from her family and foreign magazines. The junta also agreed to ease restrictions on the movement of her aides. But Suu Kyi is still weak having lost weight.

SBS news, Australia (23/09/07) Stepping out of her home in tears, Burma's democracy icon Aung San Suu Kyi greeted monks as the protest movement against the military junta grows. They stopped outside her home for about 15 minutes and chanted a Buddhist prayer: "May we be completely free from all danger, may we be completely free from all grief, may we be completely free from poverty, may we have peace in heart and mind."
