The former pirate radio station that started life in Manchester, then moved to the MV Communicator (former home of Laser 558) and is now on air in Orkney - March 2008. Out of sync.
-----------------
In September 1996 a radio station in Belfast called BCR had been taken over by the Oyston Group. Dave Miller and Janie Ash were asked by the new owners to help launch the radio station as Citybeat 96.7fm.
Janie was appointed Deputy Managing Director and Sales Director whilst Dave became the launch Programme Director and breakfast show presenter. This was the start of a friendship and ultimately the birth of The Super Station Orkney.
Fast forward to Spring 2002 both Janie and Dave had been working for various different radio stations but were both unsatisfied by the bland commerciality of the industry and yearned for some energy and excitement.
One day Dave called Janie and put an idea to her, "how about we buy the radio ship MV Communicator and launch our own station from it?" The silence on the end of the phone was deafening so Dave dismissed the idea as a daft romantic notion until the next day when Janie called him back and said "its completely mad, lets do it"!!
A few months later having located the vessel Janie and Dave went over to Holland to have a look at her. The sight of the Communicator in the flesh was awe- inspiring and both knew they wanted her as a marketing tool and base for a new radio station.
