Memorial Day observance in Smethport, organized by the McKean County Post #2497 VFW, started with a gun salute and the playing of "Taps" over the graves of deceased veterans at Rosehill Cemetery. This was followed by a parade formed on Willow Street, which stopped at the bridge on Mechanic Street where wreaths were dropped and guns fired as part of salutations to heros.

June 14th 2008 was Flag Day, commemorated in Smethport by a parade down Main Street. After the parade there was a ribbon cutting ceremony for the official opening of the 1950s style soda fountain at the Elderberry Sweet Shop at 119 W. Main Street. The event was hosted by Phillis Barnhart. Featured speakers were Chamber of Commerce President Wayne Pearson and Mayor Ross Porter.

On June 25, 2008 the Hamlin Memorial Library in Smethport held a groundbreaking ceremony to officially kick off construction of its long-awaited expansion wing, which will double the size of the current building and provide meeting space for community activities. The architect and contractor; Borough, county and state officials; as well as library staff and volunteers, were in attendance. After a welcome message and brief history of the library from Debbie Babcox, Mary Palmer officiated the rest of the ceremony and introduced the many guests and speakers.

On Saturday, April 19, 2008 Smethport, Pennsylvania residents Corky Hull, Rev. John Wesley, Jovanna Porter & photographer Ross Porter launched their kayaks at Galco Crossing (Galico) and headed north on the Potato Creek. This photo documentary is a record of their journey on the pristine Potato Creek as they head north toward the Allegheny River. All of our adventurers are members of the new Potato Creek Trail Association, a trail organization that is promoting the development of non-motorized hiking trails, water trails for canoes & kayaks, mountain bike trails, and equestrian trails in and around Smethport, (McKean County), Pennsylvania Wilds.

Smethport Mayor Ross Porter and Jim Herzog presented the history of the Boys' Magazine print shop at 304 Fulton Street, which later produced magnetic toys like Wooly Willy. A formal Historic Registry plaque was presented by Mary Pierotti on March 8, 2008 to commemorate the building.

Smethport Mayor Ross Porter presented the history of the Clark Building, home to Lindgren's Variety Store. The building was erected in 1899 and a Historic Register plaque was presented to Harry Lindgren at a ceremony on April 17, 2008 to commemorate the building.

In Mt. Jewett the annual Swedish Fest drew crowds from all over the region. Among the many activities during the three-day event was a smorgasbord at St. Matthews Lutheran Church, dancing, art and quilt shows, and a car and bike show. There was also a parade down Main Street. The Smethport Elderberry Kitchen Band provided some of the entertainment. Doris Nourse introduced the band and the musical selections. Here are some of the sights and sounds of the day.

The annual McKean County Fair came to a successful conclusion on Saturday, August 16th. In addition to rides, games, shows and exhibits, the fair featured a demolition derby, fireworks display, and music. Here are some of the sights and sounds of the fair. It's your call whether the "Screamer" or the "Fire Ball" was the scariest ride.

After 8 long months, the Tri-County Fire School in Smethport, PA graduated its very first class of Delmar Interior Fire Fighters on Saturday, August 25, 2007. The 22 new fire fighters, fire fighter-EMTs and fire fighter-paramedics represent departments from around McKean & Elk Counties.
