The "Sosh Run" is a West Point tradition dating back to 1989. Every cadet has to take an International Relations class, in which they have to write an 18-page paper known as the "Sosh Paper." The academic department has a policy that papers are due at 1600hrs sharp, so papers even one minute late are considered a full day late and are marked down one letter grade.
The tradition began when the Sosh department moved their offices into a new building during the middle of the year. Many cadets who went to turn in their paper (at the last minute) went to the old building and, realizing their mistake, were forced to literally run to turn their papers in on time.
Over the years, this tradition has evolved into a semiannual event in which cadets dress up in a variety of costumes to turn in their paper. Some people doing the Sosh Run aren't even in the class. Others have turned their paper in long beforehand. And still others are actually doing the Sosh Run for real, hoping that their paper will make it in on time.
