06.05.07 - This is a video I took a year ago and had on You Tube since then. However, my older videos are not coming through with the View in High Quality button available and the old quality of videos on you tube was poor. I will be redoing all my old videos as a result. This is a view of Star from the overlook on Mill Mountain looking down into the valley and downtown area. I will have to retake this video, however, now that I have a new camera that shoots much higher quality videos :)

I found this video in my folder of "fun" videos. I wasn't there, nor participated in the shoot, but it sure looks like these folks were having a good time. I like the fact that these people have their families, guns, and probably a BBQ going on. If I could afford the guns and ammo, this looks like my idea of the "perfect Saturday". NOTE: Recently a gunman has committed an act of violence on the Virginia Tech campus. Some commenters on YouTube have made comments to the effect that somehow the law-abiding citizens depicted in this video using lawfully-owned firearms in a safe and responsible manner are related to the violent, despicable acts at VT. Clearly, this is not the case as this video was filmed in 2005, and consists entirely of law-abiding people. This video is not the appropriate place to discuss the Virginia Tech incident, and I have removed comments relating to it, and have required approval for all new comments. I apologize for the necessity of this policy, but stupid commenters on YouTube have made it necessary.

Homecoming Celebration filmed by the Creef family (owners of the Pioneer Theater then and still today) in 1934. Music and sound clips added by me. Places in the film that are still here today are the Pioneer Theater, Fort Raleigh Hotel (now empty) Dare County courthouse (now empty), Bank of Manteo (now houses 2 gift shops) and the Orange Crush bottling barn (privately owned and used for storage). The Holcum Dairy Farm is today Marshes Light, LLC development. The farm house was moved in 2006 about 200 feet to a lot that fronts Fernando Street. Today the farm house has had a complete restoration. Sadly there was a devastating fire in 1939 that wiped out all the stores and businesses you see in this film except for the courthouse, Bank of Manteo, Fort Raleigh Hotel and the Pioneer, although it was close. The first frame with "Hub" Creef and Roy Davis, you can see a movie poster behind them. Here is what was playing: "Three on a Honeymoon" (1934) directed by James Tinling and starred Sally Eilers, ZaSu Pitts, Henrietta Crosman, Charles Starrett , Irene Hervey and Johnny Mack Brown. Romantic Comedy.

Rhett Fleitz of the Roanoke Fire-EMS Department talking about the history of the department and the book "Firefighting in Roanoke", which was authored by Fleitz. The book was a tribute to Maurice Wiseman who dedicated many years to preserving the history of the department. The video has been reproduced with permission from Blue Ridge PBS.
