Emmanuel Reinert, Executive Director of The Senlis Council, talks to CNN just after the Taliban attack in November 2007 which killed more than 73 people including school children. The attack took place just outside Afghanistan's capital city, Kabul. During the interview, Mr Reinert addresses the current security situation in Afghanistan and the ever-growing Taliban insurgency threat to both Afghanistan's security forces and NATO's ISAF forces. The insurgents have stepped up their attack frequency and rely more and more on suicide bombings. At the same time, NATO's aerial bombing campaigns cause too many civilian deaths, alienating the Afghan population and decreasing support for our stabilization mission.

Emmanuel Reinert from The Senlis Council talks to the CNN's Adrian Fineghan about the security of Afghanistan in light of its notorious opium trade. Up until now, quick fix solutions such as large-scale poppy crop eradication have done more harm than good. Undermining the desire to win the hearts and minds of Afghan farmers, such policies have destroyed any chance of a rapid reconstruction of the country. The Senlis Council, an international security and development think-tank, advocates its Poppy for Medicine policy. Proposing a unique idea of 'fair trade opium', farmers would be encouraged to grow their poppy crop for medicinal purposes, providing the world market with much needed morphine. With a resurgence of the Taliban in the south, the West drastically need to adopt a more effective counter-narcotic policy to address the grinding poverty suffered by the vast majority of the Afghan population.

Emmanuel Reinert talks to Sky News about the War in Afghanistan programme and its failure to look beyond the military plan. The phantom border separating Afghanistan from Pakistan has provided perfect breeding ground for the Taliban in recent years. Reinventing its image, the Taliban now controls over half of Afghanistan's population, undermining the legitimacy of central government and benefiting from the long line of security failures on the West's part. The lucrative opium market is at the heart of Afghanistan's economy, undoubtedly contributing to the country's extreme humanitarian crisis, standing in the way of foreign forces gaining any confidence from the local population, and consequently making any head way in its War on Terror.
