MANILA, Philippines - Rescuers battled huge waves and strong winds Sunday to reach a ferry that capsized during a deadly typhoon in the Philippines a day earlier, but found no immediate signs of the more than 740 passengers and crew. Coast guard frogmen who managed to get to the stricken ship got no response when they rapped on the hull with metal instruments, then had to give up for the night due to the strong waves. "They haven't seen anyone. They're scouring the area. They're studying the direction of the waves to determine where survivors may have drifted," coast guard spokesman Lt. Cmdr. Arman Balilo said. Rescuers hoped to get inside on Monday, likely with U.S. assistance requested by the Philippine Red Cross. Typhoon Fengshen has killed at least 137 people across the sprawling archipelago, setting off landslides and floods, and knocking out electricity. So far, 10 people from the ferry are known to have made it to land. Six bodies, including those of a man and woman who had bound themselves together, have washed ashore, along with children's slippers and life jackets. Officials were checking reports that a large number of survivors might have reached one nearby island and that a life raft was spotted off another, coast guard spokesman Cmdr. Antonio Cuasito said. "We can only pray that there are many survivors so we can reduce the number of casualties," he said. About two dozen relatives went to the Manila office of ferry owner Sulpicio Lines. Some wept as they waited for news. "I'm very worried. I need to know what happened to my family," said Felino Farionin, his voice cracking. His wife, son and four in-laws were on the ferry, which was going from Manila to Cebu. President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo talked to officials in a teleconference aired live on nationwide radio Sunday, scolding coast guard officials for allowing the ferry to leave Manila late Friday despite the bad weather. Reynato Lanoria, a janitor on the ship, estimated about 100 people could have survived, "but the others were trapped inside." "I think they are all dead by now," he told DZMM radio after making it to shore by jumping in the water and reaching a life raft. Lanoria said he was on the top deck when a crew member ordered people to put on life vests around 11:30 a.m. Saturday. About 30 minutes later, the ship began tilting so fast that elderly people and children fell on the rain-slickened deck. Passenger Jesus Gica also worried that many people were trapped below when the ship listed. "There were many of us who jumped overboard, but we were separated because of the big waves," he said. "The others were also able to board the life rafts, but it was useless because the strong winds flipped them over." The ferry initially ran aground a few miles off central Sibuyan island Saturday, then capsized, said Mayor Nanette Tansingco of Sibuyan's San Fernando. With the upturned ferry visible from her town, she appealed for food, medicine and embalming fluid. The nearly 24,000-ton ferry — with 626 passengers and 121 crew members on board — was "dead in the water" after its engine failed around noon Saturday, coast guard chief Vice Adm. Wilfredo Tamayo said. The storm stymied attempts to reach the ship and kept aircraft at bay on Saturday before shifting course Sunday to the northwest and battered Manila at dawn. Major streets were flooded, and numerous traffic lights were out. In the central province of Iloilo, Gov. Neil Tupaz said 59 people drowned, with another 40 missing. "Almost all the towns are covered by water. It's like an ocean," Tupaz said. Pope Benedict XVI said Sunday he was praying for the victims of the ferry disaster, particularly the large number of children aboard. The Philippines is predominantly Catholic. The typhoon-prone Philippines was the site of the world's worst peacetime maritime disaster when the ferry MV Dona Paz sank in 1987, killing more than 4,341 people.

A passenger ship MV Princess of the Stars has sunk off in the waters of Romblon, Philippines on Saturday. Gov't officials said they saw Sulpicio Lines' Princess of the Stars capsized. The ship may have approximately 700 passengers and crews. It's traveling in the rough seas amid a fury typhoon when the engine failed. Hundreds are feared dead. The typhoon has killed at least 141 people and 255 people are missing, most of them fishermen. The massive ferry which was built to hold about 2,000 people, flipped over about a mile off the shore of Sibuyan Island as typhoon Fengshen pummeled the Philippines. While it is a tragic accident in its entirety, it could have been avoided. We all know that the Philippines is composed of 7,107 islands and traveling by boat is the most common means of transportation. But why did they permit the boat to sail off risking the lives of 700 people? Is there no more such thing as postponement or cancellation of the travel? What's the role of PAGASA and the Coast Guard. Are they all busy practicing the papaya dance for YouTube upload? How old are the vessel and inter-islands boats? I think the issue is hopeless and the only thing that we can do is pray. Let's all pray for the deceased, their surviving families and hope for the betterment of the situation. Here's a short prayer to our Blessed Mother. We turn to you for protection, Holy Mother of God. Listen to our prayers and help us in our needs. Save us from every danger, glorious and blessed Virgin. Amen. The songs and the pics are not quite relevant..it's just my general message of sustainable growth.

15th August 2000 A man lies down to die. He is strapped to a bed and his left arm is punctured with a crude yet fatal drip. He is not alone. Over 1300 prisoners in the Philippines are on death row, awaiting their lethal injection. Among them are women and even children. The rising number of executions is part of a crackdown on crime -- Zero Tolerance Filipino style. The man in charge of this campaign is Ping Lacson of the Philippines National Police. He was nick-named Dirty Harry when he broke a big gang of Manila bank robbers and took no prisoners. Instead eleven suspects were shot dead in suspicious circumstances. "I would rather be feared than loved ... as long as I get things done", he says. And he is getting things done. In his first six months petty crime is down 30 percent and drug arrests have doubled. While politicians score points, human rights activists and leaders of the Catholic Church call for an abolition of the death penalty.

Nov 2007 Prisoners at Cebu are considered the most dangerous offenders in the Philippines. But thanks to four hours of dance lessons a day, their behaviour has been transformed. Previously, Cebu prison was a wretched place ruled by rival gangs. But when the warden introduced dance lessons, everything changed. "Everyone became friends". Now the prisoners spend most of the day practising new routines. Videos of them dancing to 80s classics have become a big hit on YouTube.

A video showcasing the beauty of the remarkable places & people of the Philippines set to the music of Freddie Aguilar's "Bayan Ko", which sometimes gets mistaken as the Philippines National Anthem because of its popularity. Here is the translation to the lyrics of this moving song. "Bayan Ko (My Country)" My country the Philippines Land of gold and flowers With love in her palms She offers beauty and virtue. And of her modesty and beauty The foreigner was attracted O, my country, you were enslaved Mired in hardship. Even birds that are free to fly Cage them and they cry, Much more a beautiful country Shall long to be free. Philippines my beloved, Cradle of my tears and poverty I'll aspire, To see you truly free. Hope you enjoy the video as much as I did making it.

Suyen and I went on vacation in Cebu from 16 to 30 April 2006. Here are some of the sights and sounds from our trip. When we got to Madridejos, we went shopping for fish in the wet market. Man, look at the size of that snail! Someone is going to eat that:P Afterward we visited the future cyber cafe that the family will run -- that is, when there is internet access in Madridejos. Hello all, First of all, I want to say thanks to all of you for watching and appreciating my video. Secondly, I want to say thanks to YouTube for featuring one of my videos yet again. Third, as I watch the counter go crazy on how many people have watched the video I realized how powerful this medium of internet television has become. I feel though, that I've sort of squandered an opportunity here. Let me explain. My mother in law has started a school on Bantayan Island for children of poor fishermen and farmers. Last year when we visited, we did a little video on it. Here is the link for that video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q3QVWCbVA3c I realized that what she is doing is a great thing. I've read many comments from Pinoy ex-patriots on how much they miss the Philippines, and even some comments on how the system there is, uh, shall we say, somewhat broken. I will not add to those comments as I do not want to put myself in a position of being a judge. Even though I am married to a very lovely smart sweet Filipina, I am still an outsider when it comes to the ways and customs of another land. I will say, however, that what Amelita Paradela is doing at the Villacarlos Academy is a great thing, and worthy of attention and respect. The school, however, as many in the Philippines is in need of support. Many of the poor villagers in the area cannot afford to send their children to school, and when they can, many of them cannot afford to send them beyond a high school education. So what I'm getting at is this, If I can get 50000 people to watch one of my videos in two days and miss their homeland and/or wish they could go for a visit, then maybe if a fraction of those would send just a little donation to the academy, well, you know how far a little money goes in the Philippines. To you it may be a cup of coffee for the day, but for a student wishing to expand his/her horizons beyond being a fisherman or a Jeepney driver, it could be a future. I don't have anything set up right now, but please email me at studestevo@yahoo.com or post a comment on http://compostelainternetxtreme.blogspot.com/ which is my brother-in-law's blog page to let me know. Thanks again everybody Stevo
