THE MISSION TO SAVE AMERICA's CHILDREN
THE CORE PROGRAM. PAULA ABDUL ,MICHAEL BECKWITH AND ERIK ESTRADA JOIN THE FIGHT AGAINST CHILDHOOD OBESITY.
An epidemic of obesity is threatening our nation's children.
THE SOLUTION:
Einstein was quoted as saying, "Imagination is more important than knowledge." However, when we examine traditional teaching ideologies we witness a lack of enthusiasm to promote imaginative thinking in students. When students approach problems utilizing different perspectives they are generally dissuaded from doing so and placed back on the standard or "acceptable" path of problem resolution. This ideology is not only detrimental to students but to educators as well. While formal methods of problem solving and learning will always be recognized as valuable due to the proven results that have occurred in the past, room needs to be made to allow our children and educational establishment to grow and move in new directions with regard to promoting forward thinking and novel ideas.
There have been many studies conducted about Physical Education, Sports, and Exercise throughout the years and throughout schools across the United States. In Los Angeles alone, more than 36% of fifth, seventh, and ninth graders are overweight. (2005 report from the California Center for Public Health Advocacy.) 82% of the ninth graders in LAUSD are physically unfit as judged by state fitness evaluations. We are in danger of establishing a new trend where our children will have lower life expectancies than their parents. Studies confirm that higher academic achievement in schools is associated with a higher level of fitness. Physical activity has proven beneficial results for adults and children. To achieve a high level of fitness, a proper diet is also recommended and knowing what foods to eat when our children raid the fridge for a snack can help them make healthier choices that will increase their fitness levels. Many schools around the country have either cut out physical education all together or have limited the time allotment for exercise during school hours. The Core Program recommends regular PE classes to be held twice a week. There should be organized fitness activities during every recess. We also suggest that teachers adopt, and apply, the practice of leading their students through MindTime and basic movements utilizing subject related games, which will help the students to stay focused.
In order to ensure the success of the Simply Consistent,Core program, participation is essential from teachers, students, school administration, parents and local community businesses. The statement, "no child left behind," should also include no child left unnoticed. We must recommit ourselves to the purpose of taking care of our children and in part, each other.
We need your help to make this happen!
