Polyglot Alexander Arguelles presents a series of videos to provide introductory overviews of the languages of the world. Working diachronically through various language families in turn, he demonstrates how to identify each language, translates a text sample to show how it works, and discusses its genetic affiliation and cultural context. Norse, Vikings introduction. Suggested authors include: "Terry Jones, Barbarians" Link provided by rabelai2006 http://www.northvegr.org/siteindex.php Here is the link. For nordicmythology I reccomend Prose EDDA. There you can read everything about the gods and valhalla. If you would like to read about ethics of the vikings you can go to Poetic edda and there in to Havamal. But the best of this all are the Icelandic Sagas. Hero romance literature, absolutely brilliant. Tales about Vikings serving kings, raiding villages, battling at Iceland and so on. I reccommend following sagas: Egils Saga Skallagrimsson, Njals saga and Laxdæla saga. Some people find it very hard to begin reading the sagas because there is lot of talking who is who and what was his fathers name, and grandfathers and so on. But when people start reading more they can see all the sagas are linked to each other. Cheers.

A little video I made about Norse mythology's influence on modern day metal music. I suppose I should add that it's my first attempt at making any sort of video, so of course it sucks.

The Vikings, Norsemen used their famed longships to travel as far east as Constantinople and to the Eastern Europe to Volga River in Russia and the Caucasus to Caucasian Albania (Azerbaijan)and Georgia, Caspian Sea , and as far west as Newfoundland. This period of Viking expansion is often referred to as the Viking Age of Scandinavian History. Azerbaijan has ancient roots with Norway and Scandinavia! Norge: Midgard og Aser: Asgard er en Jord! Odin came from the land of the "Aser" (Aeser), and is, therefore, frequently referred to as "Asa-Odin" (Aser-Odin). Asgard or Ásegard is the realm of the Gods Aser in Norse religion and Norse mythology. The exact meaning of "Asgard is Aser Land or the Land of Aser". Modern day Scandinavians migrated north from the east of the Caucasus, Aserbaijan (Azerbaijan/Caucasian Albania) in prehistoric times. According to Icelandic Sagas, written in the 13th century, the Norse God Odin migrated from the east of the Caucasus, from Aserbaijan in the first century AD. Heyerdahl concluded that Azerbaijan and not northern Europe was the center from which the Caucasian people spread so that Chinese archaeologists would find their 4000 years old remains buried in northwestern China. He based that conclusion on early Norwegian sagas written down by the Icelander, Snorre Sturlason, before his death in 1241, (Snorri, The Sagas of the Viking Kings of Norway. English translation: J. M. Stenersens Forlag, Oslo 1987). Talið er Óðinn hafi verið tyrkneskur maður, frá þar sem nú heitir Azerbaijan í fyrrverandi Sovétríkjunum. Orðið Azeri (eða maður frá Azerbaijan) er náskylt orðinu Æsir. Ímyndunaraflið breytti heimaslóðum hans í Ásgarð. Hel A little bit of info on: Hel is the Norse Goddess of the dead. She is the daughter of the trickster god Loki and the giantess Angrboda. Hel is sister of Fenris, the wolf, and Jormungand, the world-serpent. When Odin learned of her existence, he flung her down to Niflheim, the realm of cold and darkness. He gave her dominion over the underworld, which came to be called Hel after her. Hel is the final destination for those who die of illness or old age, and those who were wicked in life. Only those who died heroically are taken to Valhalla, the Hall of the Slain. Hel's realm is composed of nine levels, ranging from fairly comfortable to truly horrible, and it was she who decided to which level the dead would go. Hel herself is a sight to behold. She is half alive and half dead--in some representations, her face and body are alive, but her legs are decaying; in others, her right side is the color of healthy flesh and her left side is black with death. One of her eyes is made of fire, and with it she can see the true soul of a person, enabling her to judge them well. It is also said that there was no disease in the world until Hel was born, and that she had the power to bring plague to the towns that she passed through. Yes, her name gives us the word 'Hell', but her domain is almost the complete opposite of SATAN's abode: it's cold, damp, and populated by the kind of apathetic souls most devils would hardly feel worth the trouble of roasting. In fact most souls go to HELHEIM because they've spent their lives sitting on their asses instead of killing, pillaging and then singing rude songs about it. It's a melancholy and depressing place filled with gloomy pessimistic spirits. Which is why HEL is also Goddess of the Blues.

I noticed that there's no love for Norse by Norsewest on Youtube... yet. So here it is, the next gen sequel to Lost Vikings. This is part 1, the first 4 levels. This is essentially the same game as the SNES Lost Vikings 2, but with new graphics, new sounds and music, voices, movies, etc. Enjoy. :) A note about the opening movie. This was recorded from the PSX, which for some reason has the opening movie's audio slightly out of sync. :|

Ran the giantess is the sister and wife of Aegir, the giant lord of the sea. Together, they have nine daughters, also called The Waves, and grandmother of the Aesir god Heimdall. She may very well be Asynia. Ran has a magical net which she uses to catch drowning sailors and brings them down to her hall to live with her. Sailors always kept a gold coin or trinket to give to her, for she loves gold and gold is what lit up the inside of her underwater hall. Prose Edda Skáldskaparmál Section XXXIII Ran is the name of Ægir's wife, and their daughters are nine, even as we have written before. At this feast all things were self-served, both food and ale, and all implements needful to the feast. Then the Æsir became aware that Rán had that net wherein she was wont to catch all men who go upon the sea. Now this tale is to show whence it comes that gold is called Fire or Light or Brightness of Ægir, of Rán, or of Ægir's daughters; and now such use is made of these metaphors that gold is called Fire of the Sea, and of all names of the sea, even as Ægir on Rán had names associated with the sea. Therefore gold is now called Fire of Waters or of Rivers, and of all river-names. Ran - ("The Ravager") Vana-Goddess; She is the Sea Goddess and Goddess of death for those who perish at sea. She collects drowned people in her net. She is unpredictable and malicious. Ægir's wife, Ran, endeavored by all possible means to bring mischance upon mankind; she had in her possession a net, with which she made it her constant pursuit to draw seafaring men down to herself in the deeps of the ocean. Blessed Be
