San Jose, California - 1996 U.S. Figure Skating Championships - Rudy's unbelieveable free skate. There's nothing more a skater can ask for than to be the final skater of the night skating a perfect program in front of a home audience, getting a standing ovation before the program ends, having the audience stand-cheer-applaud from the end of the program until after the announcing of the scores and the final placements, and earning 6.0's from the judges. After the first set of marks came up, the audience started chanting "6," and after the scoreboards showed Rudy winning the Men's Competition, the audience then started chanting "Rudy." It was the most amazing and electric experience at a Nationals or Worlds I've ever been to! The energy has never been matched! I want to thank Louise Pasternack for making it possible for me to witness this magnificent moment live in person. FYI, the gentleman with Rudy and his sister Laura in the Kiss & Cry is Rudy's assistant coach/choreographer, John Brancato. And the 2 ladies who hugged and kissed Rudy at the end in the Kiss & Cry area were, I was told, volunteers at Nationals, who were also local skate moms whose kids trained at the same rink as Rudy and were also coached at times by Rudy. They were supposed to remain impartial, but after one of your rink-mates skates the performance of a lifetime, how could you not react like that?
