What's happening here is that a container (in this case, the lid from a jar) containing a non-newtonian fluid (in this case, a mixture of cornstarch and water) is being placed on a vibrating surface (in this case, the cone of a subwoofer). The subwoofer is playing a continuous note of frequency 75 Hz. I'm holding the container somewhat firmly down, as there would be cornstarch all over my carpet otherwise. While we didn't get to observe any Faraday Waves in this case (they occur best I believe at about 2500 Hz, and my sub can't play anything that high pitched), what we do see is madness of another sort.
