The original and best version of this much-covered song, this is Maria performing her classic #1 hit on TOTP in September 1990. Show Me Heaven was written by Maria McKee, Jay Rifkin and Eric Rackin and featured in the Tom Cruise/Nicole Kidman film Days of Thunder. Maria initially turned down the chance to record the track after objecting to the lyrics of the original version of the song (entitled Secret Fire), but a compromise was reached when the soundtrack producers allowed her to re-write and re-title the song. After entering the UK chart at #26 this performance on TOTP propelled it into the top five before it reached #1 in October 1990 where it remained for four weeks. This is by far and away Maria's biggest commercial success as a performer, becoming the 6th best selling single in the UK in 1990, as well as a top ten hit all over the world, however Show Me Heaven was her second UK#1 hit as a songwriter, as Feargal Sharkey had taken her song A Good Heart to the top spot 5 years earlier. Maria's other well known contribution to a film soundtrack is If Love Is A Red Dress (Hang Me In Rags) from Pulp Fiction.
