QANTAS 747, en route from London to Melbourne via Hong Kong make an emergency landing at Manila due to a large hole in its underbody causing a rapid decompression in the cabin. (Theories for what caused the hole last night included an exploding oxygen canister or fire extinguisher, metal weakened by corrosion or a prohibited item in the baggage hold.) Courier-Mail 26/07/08 ***I did not film this. Found it on the internet***

Gaping hole in Qantas jet forces emergency landing A large hole in the fuselage of a jet forced a Qantas flight to make a rapid descent and emergency landing, the airline said. "There was an almighty crack," said one passenger on the Hong Kong-Melbourne flight that landed in Manila, Philippines, instead. Another passenger said there was "a big bang." "I knew there was a hole somewhere, but I didn't know what was going on."

The Lufthansa jet, with 137 passengers onboard, struggled through the strong winds of a powerful winter storm to land at Hamburg Airport, Spiegel Online reported. After skidding along the runway and rocking violently, the pilot was forced to abort the landing. Later, all 137 passengers arrived safely.

The video of the very first moon landing of the apollo 11 mission in 1969! Neil Armstrong was the first man to set foot on the moon with his now legenday words "One small step for man, a giant leap for mankind." This is a truly amazing video and it was in 1969!!! If you think about it, you have orders of magnitude more processing power in your mobile phone than they did in the whole space craft!! Incredible!

Landing St.Maarten from cockpit 747. After nosewheel landing camera touched windshield causing crackling noise. For those viewers who made comments (or new viewers who are thinking about making the comment) that this approach is too high and/or too fast or whatever else you might think, here some free ;) flying lessons from someone who's flying B747's for 20 years: On an approach on instruments a B747 should cross the runway threshold (= the piano keys) with the main wheels at ± 35 ft above threshold. The 747 is so big that at that point the altitude of the cockpit is 35 ft higher, so the cockpit is at ± 70 ft when main wheels cross the threshold. On a visual approach, as is the case here at St.Maarten, we have to have some more margin. Normally the pilot aims to see the runway threshold disappear under the nose at 80 ft (mind you, the main wheels are at that moment still NOT above the threshold) to have sufficient main wheel clearance. If you look at the video and notice the altitude callouts, you see the threshold disappear under the nose at the call 50, so actually I am a bit too low in stead of too high. (Actually I am only too low for a visual approach. If you look at my landing at JFK http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q4YoXyYBbYA&feature=user you will see that I cross the threshold also at 50 ft, which is normal on an instrument approach. Note: the automatic altitude callouts you hear on this video are Radio Altimeter altitudes. The Radio Alt is zero when the gear is on the ground with struts extended.) Now, there are quite some viewers who think we landed too far on the runway. What follows from earlier explanation is this: We approach a runway at a three degrees approach angle. If main wheels cross the threshold at the correct altitude, the main wheels will hit the runway at approx 900ft (300m) behind the threshold, that is, if you don't flare the airplane. If you look again at the video and wait till you hear 50,40,30,20,10 and see the solid white markers, they are at 900ft behind the threshold and the plane touches down right behind them, because I did flare the airplane. (Passengers seem to hate hard landings!!) THIS IS THE NORMAL TOUCHDOWN POINT FOR A B747. The FCTM(=Flight Crew Training Manual) from Boeing says: flare distance is approx 300 to 600mtr (=900 to 1800ft) beyond the threshold. So, please, stop nagging about this landing being too far on the runway. And then something about too fast: On this approach the 747 weighs about 260.000 kgs. The required approach speed is then 150 kts which is about 175 mph or 280 km/hr. So what about TOO FAST? If we fly slower, we will fall out of the air!!

NASA's Phoenix spacecraft landed in the northern polar region of Mars today to begin three months of examining a site chosen for its likelihood of having frozen water within reach of the lander's robotic arm. Radio signals received at 4:53:44 p.m. Pacific Time (7:53:44 p.m. Eastern Time) confirmed the Phoenix Mars Lander had survived its difficult final descent and touchdown 15 minutes earlier. The signals took that long to travel from Mars to Earth at the speed of light. Mission team members at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Pasadena, Calif.; Lockheed Martin Space Systems, Denver; and the University of Arizona, Tucson, cheered confirmation of the landing and eagerly awaited further information from Phoenix later tonight. Among those in the JPL control room was NASA Administrator Michael Griffin, who noted this was the first successful Mars landing without airbags since Viking 2 in 1976. "For the first time in 32 years, and only the third time in history, a JPL team has carried out a soft landing on Mars," Griffin said. "I couldn't be happier to be here to witness this incredible achievement." During its 422-million-mile flight from Earth to Mars after launching on Aug. 4, 2007, Phoenix relied on electricity from solar panels during the spacecraft's cruise stage. The cruise stage was jettisoned seven minutes before the lander, encased in a protective shell, entered the Martian atmosphere. Batteries provide electricity until the lander's own pair of solar arrays spread open. "We've passed the hardest part and we're breathing again, but we still need to see that Phoenix has opened its solar arrays and begun generating power," said JPL's Barry Goldstein, the Phoenix project manager. If all goes well, engineers will learn the status of the solar arrays between 7 and 7:30 p.m. Pacific Time (10 and 10:30 p.m. Eastern Time) from a Phoenix transmission relayed via NASA's Mars Odyssey orbiter. The team will also be watching for the Sunday night transmission to confirm that masts for the stereo camera and the weather station have swung to their vertical positions. "What a thrilling landing! But the team is waiting impatiently for the next set of signals that will verify a healthy spacecraft," said Peter Smith of the University of Arizona, principal investigator for the Phoenix mission. "I can hardly contain my enthusiasm. The first landed images of the Martian polar terrain will set the stage for our mission."

Here is video of the 'TNT' 737 crash-landing at Birmingham Airport (EGBB) This landing happened after the aborted attempt at Nottingham East Midlands, where the right main undercarrige was ripped off and took out the flaps on the right wing. The aircraft is presently sitting on the unused runway at Birmingham Airport and can be seen from the golf course nearby. (So my cousin informs me!) Filmed by a news helicopter that was in the area and handed over to the local Police and Investigation Team, this is probably the best footage of an incident like this I have seen.

I went to Bhutan several times and, being a pilot, I could not help film this landing from the flight deck. Landing in Paro is basically visual, with a requirement to have the runway in sight on downwind. See for yourself.
