Helena Norberg Hodge is the founder and director of the International Society for Ecology and Culture, a non-profit organisation concerned with the protection of both biological and cultural diversity, and education for action. This insightful case study, based on Helena Norberg-Hodge's book examines how development, with its attendant seductive images of glamour and gadgets promises a life free of hardship but destroys social and ecological bonds. Pollution, resource depletion, urban sprawl, breakdown of family and community, crime and growing economic disparity are not the sole province of the West, Norberg-Hodge traces their appearance in Ladakh to Western notions of progress The film does not suggest that we renounce our wicked Western ways and head for the hills, but that we re-establish our ties to the earth and recognize its natural limitations. In the end, these rules to live by transcend cultural boundaries, and Norberg-Hodge eloquently shows us the way to follow them. For More Information please visit: http://www.isec.org.uk/

Irish basket-maker Joe Hogan travels to Ladakh province in the far north of India, bordering Tibet to meet with local basket-maker Punsok Dorge to see how similar both their traditions are. He find them very similar and the two men work together to create a willow and grass basket. This Buddhist monastery has remained open at all times and has experience none of the persecution that Buddhists across the border endured. Punsok offers Joe yak-butter tea and tsampawhich his wife prepares.

September 2005 In Ladakh, India, on a high altitude plateau, many young women are choosing to become nuns, living in monasteries on the mountaintops. Aside from being afforded the opportunity to develop their spirituality, these young women are gaining some independence and freedom that they would otherwise not have had in their rural lives. The nuns are benefiting from efforts to improve their literacy and secular eduction, as well as the opportunity to use modern technology, including the internet!

Ladakh, Jan 7 (ANI): A Tibetan monastery located in the Ladakh region is proving to be a major tourist lure. Disket Gompa, a monastery in the Nubra Valley of Ladakh region is a mesmerizing tourist destination. Its Gompa is dramatically positioned and is believed to be founded in the early 15th century. The 1400-year-old monastery was built by a Buddhist Lama scholar Sherab Zsangpo and also has a school for monks.

This is a video slideshow of a 5 week backpacking & climbing trip through Ladakh, India (Jammu & Kashmir province). First part of the trip was a trek from Darcha to Padum over 5000m+ passes through the heart of the remote Himalayan kingdom of Zanskar. Next stop was the town of Leh from which we undertook several side trips, e.g. a climb of 6120m Stok Kangri and a ride on a scooter up the world's highest motorable road. Overall an incredible journey through India's unknown 'little Tibet'.
