http://www.ted.com In this hopeful talk, 2006 TED Prize winner Jehane Noujaim unveils her wish: a global acceptance of diversity, mediated through the power of film. The first step? Getting people to understand each other. In 2003, Noujaim gained access to both sides of the story of the Iraq war for her film Control Room, a dichotomy she illustrates with provocative clips of Al Jazeera journalist Sameer Khader and U.S. press officer Josh Rushing. Noujaim ends by outlining her plans for Pangea Day, an event in which people all over the world can watch the same films at the same time. (Contains strong language.)

++ Join the discussion on PangeaDay.org ++ Directed by Jehane Noujaim (Egypt/USA) This short documentary offers a unique and intimate perspective into the thoughts of a Moroccan imam and his wife as they discuss their romance. They describe their thoughts about how to build a deep, trusting, and enduring relationship in this film that shows the specific ways the Islamic faith relates to the universal concepts of love and respect. Jehane Noujaim is the director of, among other films, the award-winning documentaries Control Room and Startup.com. Raised in Cairo, Egypt, she attended Harvard University and graduated magna cum laude with a degree in Visual Arts and Philosophy. She has worked for MTV's News and Documentary Division as a segment producer for the series Unfiltered, and as a director and cinematographer on films such as Born Rich, Only the Strong Survive, and Down from the Mountain. In 2006, Noujaim won the prestigious TED Prize, an annual award in which the recipients are granted a wish. Jehane's wish -- to create a day in which the world comes together through film -- was the catalyst for Pangea Day. n the early days of the war in Iraq, Americans could turn on their televisions twenty-four hours a day and take a front row seat with coalition troops careening across the desert. We could follow the action live as precision bombers brought Iraqi cities to their knees and American POWs were rescued and triumphantly returned home as television heroes. We could watch soldiers toppling statues of Saddam Hussein. But as Americans witnessed U.S. victory at home, a different story unfolded on television sets throughout the Arab world. Qatari-based Al-Jazeera broadcast images of Iraqi civilian casualties and American POWs that were taboo in the American media. Many claim that as a result, America barred Al-Jazeera journalists from reporting on Wall Street and bombed their headquarters in Baghdad. As the saying goes there are always two sides to every story, but in a media-managed war where does the truth lie? With exclusive behind-the-scenes access to Al-Jazeera, American journalists, and the players at Central Command, Control Room takes an unprecedented look at the business of war. Uniquely qualified with a cross-cultural perspective, Egyptian-American filmmaker Jehane Noujaim (Startup.com), travels to the headquarters of Al-Jazeera and U.S. Central Command to capture the staging of the war in Iraq and the media's vital role in writing history. Director Jehane Noujaim is available to speak with the film through Evil Twin Booking Agency. www.eviltwinbooking.org info *a*t* eviltwinbooking.org

Here, set against the backdrops of Nairobi city and the beautiful landscape of Uhuru Park (Maasai country), a Kenyan choir sings the Indian national anthem. The director has chosen the Indian anthem because Kenya is home to a sizeable Indian population (including Sikhs & Jains also) of approximately 2.5 million, most of them descendants of the East African Railways labourers who were brought over by the British during the late 19th and early 20th centuries when the British colonialists ruled Kenya and the rest of the East African region. Control room is a rate film that is both timely and timeless: timeless because it explores the ancient and complex relationship between the western and Arab worlds, timely because it reveals how satellite television has changed the way wars are reported- from news providers, driven by the patriotism of their audiences, to army information officers, driven by military objectives. Control room is a seminal documentary that explores how truth is gathered, presented, and ultimately created by those who deliver it.

Pangeaday is an International Film Festival inspired by visionary documentary film maker Jehane Noujaim. This film festival is designed to use the power of film in order to emphasize tolerance and unite the people of the world. Not as a graded or assigned project, we students were introduced to Pangeaday through our Peace Studies teacher, Mrs. Bazinet. Our teacher gave us total freedom to create any type of film that would represent us as students, teenagers, and humanitarians. Mrs. Bazinet was hoping that we would run with the idea of creating an inspirational film, and when we pitched her the idea, "The Power of Hands," she was extremely pleased. We believe that "The Power of Hands" has immense potential to be inspirational and persuasive. We also believe that our short film depicts a positive outlook of us as teenagers, without the superficial stereotype. The film represents us as a school and us as a nation—how we, as a young and educated generation, realize that we have the power to influence the future, and how we aspire to influence for the better. We seek to show that we are willing to take matters into are own hands and we are willing to lend a helping hand. "The Power of Hands" highlights voiceless and faceless beauty, a universal concept that the hands that destroy are the same hands that help, the awareness that love is more powerful than hatred, and the notion that we, as the people of the world, have the power in our hands because we have the choice of what to do with our hands and what to fill them with. As teenagers, we took advantage of our beautiful and powerful hands to create a motivational film. We would like to thank all who "lent a helping hand" to our team during the creation of this film. A special thanks to the several students and faculty members of Auburn High School, especially Mrs. Bazinet. Also, we would like to thank "The Books" for giving us permission to use their brilliant music which served as the voiceless eloquence in our film. Enjoy! "The Power of Hands" Team at Auburn High School
