Live from the Bitter End - Nov. 1 2007 http://www.GraysonSandersBand.com http://www.myspace.com/graysonsanders GRAYSON SANDERS BAND Alex Beckmann Jay Goodman Grayson Sanders Dan Tirer Upcoming Shows: Tues. Dec. 4 - Bitter End Thur. Dec. 6 - Fontana's Thumping funk rhythms, jazz melodies, and soaring vocals, the Grayson Sanders Band seamlessly unites the members' extensive jazz training, life-long rock influences and brilliant pop sensibilities to create a fresh synthesis of sound. Navigating the sea of today's monotony, their music floats above the rest, held up by the strength of Grayson Sanders' exciting songwriting and the stilts of a uniquely funkified rhythm section. Formed in the fall of 2006, GSB met at NYU's prestigious Jazz program, where the four musicians have cultivated their skill with top players such as John Scofield, Kenny Werner and Richard Bona. A new addition to the group, guitarist Dan Tirer's remarkable guitar skills have clearly developed from an almost schizofrenic list of influences ranging from Jimmy Page and Jimi Hendrix, to Jonny Greenwood and Jill Scott. A graduate of the NYU jazz department, and former lead guitarist in the funk/rock band Funky Butter, he finds no difficulty in seemlessly sliding between sultry, latin one-note lines, to frenetic, distortion laden fast picking. His uncanny ability to either soar into a solo or create a blanket of background sound serves the band well and only adds to their powerful live experience. Drummer Alex Beckmann's unique playing resembles the organic versatility of Carter Beauford and the experimental spirit of Billy Martin, creating a solid rhythmic environment for the band's melodic elements to flourish. Playing fretless bass with the funk and soul of Motown's James Jamerson, Jay Goodman's grasp of multiple musical styles is reminiscent of Jaco Pastorius. These qualities only intensify Grayson Sanders' command of the keyboard, all serving as the vibrant backdrop to his soulful lyrics. An honest combination of boyish wonderment and a sophisticated sense of the world, he writes earnestly about both despair and happiness. Perfecting their live show with the utmost discipline, the band spends hours reworking songs, solos, and chord changes, to succeed in bringing jazz improv to modern structures. The result is a stellar fusion as sultry as Jamiroquai and infectious as Coldplay. After captivating listeners last spring on a tour of prep schools and colleges, GSB has continued to rally a growing fan base, selling out the Knitting Factory's tap bar on several occasions, as well as playing such esteemed NYC venues as the Lion's Den. Along with GSB's live show, their EP Found at Sea, released in summer 2007, clearly establishes the band as one of those rare groups who have the facility and understanding to traverse various genres of music and craft expertly structured tunes. http://www.GraysonSandersBand.com http://www.myspace.com/graysonsanders

The third son of a draughtsman father and a mother who was a caterer, Fletch first sat at a drum kit aged four when his brother Philip, thirteen years older, was forming a band in the family home. "I remember vividly the exhilaration I felt playing those drums" explains Fletch. "I felt natural behind the kit and from then on sneaked in to my brother's bedroom to play when no one else was around". Fletch quickly mastered the rudiments, surprising family and friends with his enthusiasm and skill. "I enjoyed performing to others even as a child". Fortunately his parents were supportive of his passion and encouraged his playing. When Fletch was eight his father bought him a second hand red tortoise-shell Carlton drum kit. "From then on I knew that I wanted to be a professional drummer. Nothing else really mattered, I would even forget to eat!" Lessons began with John Lee, a well respected local tutor who taught Fletch to sight read. Invitations to gigs in pubs and clubs with a variety of bands began when when Fletch was only twelve! By the age of fifteen Fletch was already semi-pro and at eighteen he left school to become a full time musician. An early apprenticeship in the tough pubs and clubs in the north of England instilled in him a strong disciplined approach to his work and a sound understanding of what it meant to be an entertainer. "I did everything from '50s rock and roll to function bands wearing a dickie bow!" Buddy Rich and Carl Palmer were the first drummers that made an impact on Fletch. Other early influences were Billy Cobham and John McLaughlin's Mahavisnu Orchestra, Terry Bozzio and Frank Zappa. Listening to jazz rock led Fletch to the jazz master drummers; Grady Tate, Elvin Jones, Gene Krupa, Joe Morello, Art Blakey and Steve Gadd. Later, Weather Report's Jaco Pastorius inspired him hugely, "a troubled mind with soulful intention". Other performers that made an impact were Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Art Tatum, Jimi Hendrix and Jeff Beck. More recently influences include JoJo Mayer and his band Nerve based in New York. An urban sound that mixes old style techniques with modern drum 'n' bass grooves. This year Racid Taha's French Algerian band with it's synthesis of North African Rai, hip-hop and punk has "invigorated" Fletch.
