Jesse Helms' infamous thirty second commercial showing a pair of white hands crumpling a job rejection letter as a narrator says: "You needed that job, and you were the best qualified, but they had to give it to a minority, because of a racial quota. Is that really fair? Harvey Gantt says it is. Gantt supports Ted Kennedy's racial quota law that makes the color of your skin more important than your qualifications. Your vote on this issue next Tuesday. For racial quotas, Harvey Gantt. Against racial quotas, Jesse Helms."

MY SPECIAL ANGEL Words & music by Jimmy Duncan This was a big hit for Bobby Helms in 1957 NOTE FROM ANGEL, DAUGHTER OF BOBBY HELMS MCCARTNEYAFHM -- As the daughter of the late great Bobby Helms I would just like to thank the person who put this together. It is beautiful. It makes me proud to know that their are still people out there who remember who Bobby Helms is... I appreciate you keeping his music alive. He would be so thrilled to know that many many people have the ability to hear his music. Thanks again! Angel --Regarding 'My Special Angel'-- (info from Wikipedia) The song became a big hit in 1957 for Bobby Helms, peaking at #7 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. This version of the song also spent four weeks at #1 on the Country chart. The backing vocals were sung by the Anita Kerr Singers. It was revived in 1968 by The Vogues, a vocal group founded in Pennsylvania who had already scored Top 10 hits in the U.S. with the songs "You're the One" and "Five O'Clock World". This cover of "My Special Angel" also reached #7 on the Hot 100 chart; it fared better on the Easy Listening chart (which would later become known as the Adult Contemporary chart), where it spent two weeks at #1. --BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION-- (from Wikipedia) Bobby Helms, 15 August 1933 -- 19 June 1997) was an American singer who enjoyed his peak success in 1957. Born in Bloomington, Indiana into a musical family, he began performing as a duo with his brother, Freddie, before going on to a successful solo career in country music. In 1956, Helms made his way to Nashville, Tennessee where he signed a recording contract with Decca Records. The following year would be filled with astonishing successes. Helms' first single in 1957 titled "FRAULEIN" went to No. 1 on the country music chart and made it into the Top 40 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. Later that same year he released "MY SPECIAL ANGEL" that also went to No. 1 on the country charts and entered the Top 10 on Billboard's pop music chart, peaking at No. 7. Released just a few days before Christmas of 1957, his song "JINGLE BELL ROCK", was a big hit. Uniquely, it also re-emerged four out of the next five years, and sold so well that it repeated each time as a top hit, and became a Christmas classic still played to this day. Stories that Helms wrote and recorded the song "Jingle Bell Rock" with legendary guitar player Hank Garland, seem to be apocryphal - ASCAP and the All Music Guide list the writers of the song as Joseph Beal, Joseph Carlton, James Ross and James Boothe. Helms continued touring and recording for the next three decades. His pioneering contribution to the genre has been recognized by the Rockabilly Hall of Fame. Helms spent most of his later years living just outside of Martinsville, Indiana, until the time of his death from emphysema and asthma, at the age of 63 in 1997. He was portrayed by the actor Brad Hawkins, in the 2006 film, Crazy.

Florida-born but London-based Jimmy Helms had a UK#8 hit in spring 1973 with this fantastic record, but subsequent releases failed to match its success and it remained his only chart hit for 15 years, until in 1988 he was a founder member of Londonbeat, who enjoyed a string of hit records in the UK and Europe in the late 80s/early 90s, and also had a US#1 with 'I've Been Thinking About You' in 1991. They also tried to represent the UK in the 1995 Eurovision Song Contest, but lost out to Love City Groove in the pre-selection!
