老赵是个五十多岁的农民，他南下到深圳打工，却因为好友老王死在工地上，决定展开回乡安葬老王之旅。老赵先把老王伪装成醉鬼，混上了长途车，却不幸在途中遇上劫匪。老赵誓死保护老王的补偿金，赢得劫匪敬重之余，还救了一车人的财物。但他因为暴露了尸体，结果反而给乘客赶了下车。 老赵在路上拦车，把老王假装成急救病人，并遇上好心人把他们送到医院。晚上要住店，过了一夜才发现钱被偷了，老赵不禁悲从中来，但这未能动摇他的决心。要解决钱的问题，他把老王装成乞丐；要解决吃饭的问题，他到别人的葬礼哭丧；要掩盖尸斑，他请妓女为老王化妆。 一路上，老赵遇到形形色色的中国人。家乡在望之际，他遇上泥石流，只能靠意志力战胜大自然。老赵被村民捧为英雄，在医院中苏醒后，发现自己上了电视，但他要做的第一件事，还是用非常规办法，把老王的尸体偷回来。当老赵带着老王回到故乡时，却发现故乡已变成水库，村庄都埋在水底了。此时，一段回忆涌现老赵眼前...... 小酒馆里，大醉的老赵向老王抱怨生活艰辛、身体衰竭，他极害怕自己客死他乡。同样大醉的老王对他说："你死了，我就是背也要把你背回家乡。"
