Please enjoy this clip of pianist Willie Pickens solo performance from the spectacular DVD "Elvin Jones: Jazz Machine." The historic live concert DVD features Elvin Jones playing with the thunderous power that influenced generations of players to come out smokin' and go from there. Veterans Sonny Fortune and Chip Jackson brilliantly orchestrate the power of Jones' drums, while young confrere saxophonist Ravi Coltrane and pianist Willie Pickins showcase their skills while helping accentuate their mentor's bold, free flowing style that helped move his instrument from the back of the club to the forefront of music.
"...a powerful demonstration of modern jazz by one of music's masters" - Chuck Berg, Jazz Times
It would be impossible to overstate the importance of master drummer Elvin Jones in the evolution of current and mainstream Jazz. Elvin followed older brothers Hank and Thad onto the Detroit jazz scene, where all forged eminent careers. By the mid 1960s he was a member of John Coltrane's groundbreaking quartet, playing on massively influential recordings such as A Love Supreme and Coltrane 'Live' at the Village Vanguard.
Touted by life magazine as "the world's greatest rhythmic drummer," and described by percussion icon Louie Bellson as "Mother Earth coming alive with syncopation," Elvin Jones' influence reverberated throughout not only the Jazz community, but all of music, influencing famous drummers such as Ginger Baker of Cream and Mitch Mitchell of the Jimi Hendrix Experience.
Selections on the DVD include "Is There A Jackson In The House?," "Ray El," and "Doll Of The Bride."
