Video about Type 1 Diabetes by an 11 year old girl.

Not too long ago, George Bush vetoed his first bill after 5, 1/2 years of serving for our country as president. The bill he vetoed did not allow stem cell research to be funded properly by the government, while the many millions of people like me could be cured from the research. His main reasons for vetoing the bill had to do with cloning, and us being a Christian country. Following this announcement, George Bush recieved a standing ovation. None of the new canidates have spoken about stem cell research except Ron Paul, and he disagreed to fund the research. I am 15 years old. I have had Diabetes for 10 years, and this comming March of 2008 will be my 11th. year. Diabetes is more than just a life threatening disease. It's you're life... period. But there is hope. The JDRF (Juvenille Diabetes Research Foundation) holds a Walk-to-Cure-Diabetes every year in Siesta Key Beach, Florida. They raise millions of dollars a year and span to over 200 locations around the Earth. Diabetes can be cured across America with proper funding from organizations, the government, and people like you. This is also a video to all of our current canidates running for the title of the 44th. US president. Diabetes accounts for 7% of the population of your country. What will you do to help the disease? What are your plans for funding stem cell research? Why? Resource: http://tinyurl.com/3d5fjk Note: the following statistics pertain to the United States of America only, unless otherwise stated. Song: Casino Royale Soundtrack: Vesper Q and A about Diabetes: Q: What is Diabetes? A: Your body turns food into energy using insulin. Insulin is made by the pancreas and allows the sugar to be used by your body. Diabetes is a chronic disease where you're pancreas slows down or stops functioning. Without insulin, the sugar stays in your bloodstream. However, with too much insulin, you won't have reserve energy for standing, walking, and sometimes your body can't keep warm with low blood sugar. I have to monitor my blood sugar levels several times a day and take insulin from shots to make sure my blood sugar levels don't go too high or too low. Q: Does Diabetes happen to fat people? A: Not all types of Diabetes happen to obese people. Type 1 (Juvenille Diabetes) is hereditary, so you can't prevent it. It takes over you as a child or teen. Type 2 Diabetes occurs in obese people or old people, whose pancreas's aren't strong enough to meet the demands for insulin. Q: Does it go away? A: No. It is a lifelong disease. It's impossible to avoid completelly without the stem cell procedure. Q: What is life like as a Diabetic? A: Normal. Just a different kind of normal. I take shots and go to the doctors once every couple months, but I'm not stripped of my life. I have a diet and I have to watch what I eat, but I can still eat my favorite foods once in a while. Q: The diet... you have a diet? A: Well, I need to regulate my blood sugar levels. My diet is as followed: don't take too much sugar when you're blood sugar level is high, and drink sugar (it has to be a drink, food takes too long to digest) when your blood sugar level is low. I eat snacks during the day and 3 meals. You can't skip any meals or snacks, or else you'll feel it. Q: You feel your blood sugar levels? A: Yes. When my blood sugar is high, It's harder for me to pay attention or work properly. I feel warm and hyper. Sometimes I'll be agressive. When I'm low, I feel shakey and cold, but usually hungry. I might start sweating and feel very tired. Sometimes I feel dizzy, if it goes down far enough (thank goodness it doesn't!) Q: What's considered "normal" blood-sugar wise? A: The units for blood sugars are measured in mg. of sugar per dL of blood. 80-120 is normal, but it may go between 60-160 depending on how much you eat or exersize. I go between 100-200 for the most part, but I have had numbers as low as 35 and as high as 500. Q: I never knew you were a diabetic! How come you didn't say so before? A: As much as I love to educate people about the disease, I'm not different from anyone else on Youtube: I'm still a human being. I might need more time on tests or medical attention when I'm exersizing vigerously, but it's not like I'm a different person! I live my life differently, that's all. Q: What was that bracelet in the last picture? A: That's my Medic Alert bracelet on my bed. If I pass out from my blood sugars going too low or too high, then the paramedics will be able to see that I'm a diabetic, and they may be able to wake me up with glucagon (think of it as sugar-in-a-bottle) or an insulin shot. Q: What can I do to help? Where can I learn more? A: http://www.jdrf.org

Glucose metabolism disorders such as obesity, hypoglycemia and type II diabetes can produce a cluster of symptoms associated with these problems. Syndrome X is a catchall term for a group of problems that share a common cardinal cause, namely excess insulin in the bloodstream. The problem usually begins in lesser stages and advances as months and years of dietary abuse continue. Carbohydrate intolerance, the first stage of syndrome X, manifests itself as obesity. In fact, over 75 percent of all overweight people have their weight problem due to excess insulin in the body. The next concern is low blood sugar, or hypoglycemia. Excess insulin production and over-active insulin receptor sites cause low blood sugar. Eventually, these problems, if left unchecked, can and do proceed to type II diabetes, a condition of excess insulin and under-active insulin receptor sites. Together, conditions of excess insulin such as obesity, hypoglycemia or low blood sugar and diabetes make up the fastest growing disease epidemic in all industrialized nations. The Institute of Nutritional Science has specialized in syndrome X and the related problems of obesity, hypoglycemia, low blood sugar and diabetes, and offers a three-phase program for both managing and preventing this devastating cycle of disease. Natural alternatives to controlling blood sugar have come a long way in recent years. Chromium, vanadium, alpha lipoic acid and select herbal extracts in key combinations, have shown to lower insulin and blood sugar levels both safely and effectively. Chromium naturally helps to lower blood sugar by sparing glucose usage. Vanadium has a direct effect on the insulin receptor sites of the body, making them much more effective. The end result is lowered insulin requirements. The key in managing conditions such as hypoglycemia and type II diabetes is lowering insulin levels. Chromium, vanadium alpha lipoic acid and key herbal extracts have proved very effective in lowering both insulin and blood sugar levels naturally. If you are significantly overweight and lower calorie diets have not worked well for you in the past, consider taking our Weight Management Test to help discover if your weight problem could be due to excess insulin production in response to carbohydrate ingestion.

Researchers are looking at lettuce as a possible cure for diabetes. "This would be not only a cure, but an inexpensive cure," diabetes researcher Dr. Henry Daniell told KMBC's Kelly Eckerman. Could it be that simple? Could a cure for diabetes exist in genetically modified lettuce? Here's how it works: A lettuce leaf is placed in a machine and then injected with a human gene for insulin. The leaf is essentially producing human insulin, Eckerman reported. It has been tested on mice. Daniell said he was shocked by the results. By the end of the study, the diabetic mice had normal blood and urine. "Once this autoimmune problem was cured, the beta cells came back to life and produced normal levels of insulin," Daniell said. The lettuce has been tested on mice only, which has drawn criticism. "We've been learning more and more to our disappointment that the type of diabetes that mice get, that we often study, does not translate well into humans in many instances. So I think one has to hold back their enthusiasm and let it play out in the scientific community," said Dr. David Robbins, an endocrinologist at the University of Kansas Hospital.

http://www.PreOp.com This program will demonstrate the use of insulin pens. The goal is to inject the insulin into the subcutaneous tissue between the top layer of the skin, the dermis and the underlying muscle layer. Insulin pens are devices that can provide an easy way to carry and give insulin when away from home. Also, for people who are not comfortable working with syringes and bottles to draw up and measure individual doses, the pens provide a convenient and accurate alternative. There are two types of insulin pens: * those that are completely disposable after providing a single dose of insulin * and those that use disposable cartridges to provide multiple doses. * If you use more than one type of insulin, you must use a separate pen for each type. The basic method of use is similar for both pens and there are four main steps to be learned. An insulin pen has three components. * A base which contains the mechanism for measuring the correct dose. * A holder for the cartridge of insulin * and a cap, which is removed and replaced by the needle prior to the injection. Follow the manufacturer's instructions to remove the cap, separate the base from the cartridge holder by unscrewing it. Rewind the base dose regulating mechanism back to zero and put down the base. Pick up the cartridge holder. Shake out the used cartridge. Check that the new cartridge contains the correct insulin and insert it, metal end first, into the holder. Screw the cartridge holder back onto the base. * Keep a record of all your injections and also record when you begin a new cartridge. * Subtract the total insulin used in previous injections from the total of 150 units in each cartridge to be sure you have enough insulin left for the next dose. Clean the end of the cartridge holder and the projecting cartridge with an alcohol swab. Remove the seal from the end of the new needle unit. Don't touch the exposed needle or allow it to touch any other object. Screw the needle unit onto the end of the cartridge holder. Pull the outer shield off the needle. Do not throw it away. You will need it later to remove the needle unit from the pen. Pull the inner shield off the needle and discard it. Hold the pen upright and tap the cartridge holder to enable air bubbles to escape through the needle. Dial the dose knob so that #1 is in the dose scale window and prime the pen according to the manufacturer's instructions. Hold the needle upright. Press in the injection button at the end of the unit and check that insulin comes out of the tip of the needle. If no insulin is seen, continue to dial up one unit at a time and press the injection button until insulin is seen. A new cartridge may take 4-6 units before insulin flows. Dial in your dose of insulin in addition to the units needed to produce the insulin flow. For example, if it took 4 units to start the insulin flow and your insulin dose is 20, the total in the dose scale window will be 24. * Choose and clean the injection site as usual. Pinch the skin and insert the needle through the skin at a 90Ë? angle. Press the injection button at the end of the needle and wait 5 seconds for the injection to be completed before removing the needle from the skin. * The needle must be removed from the pen immediately after the injection is finished. Place the outer needle shield that you had saved on the counter top with the opening facing up. Without holding onto the shield, insert the pen needle carefully into the shield and push down firmly. Grip the shield and unscrew the needle from the pen. Dispose of the shielded needle into the puncture proof container that you have reserved for your needles. Store all pens that are in use at room temperature.
