SOFTBALL HITTING CHALLENGE A HIT Softball pitching stars Mina Duffy and Kathy Fong were the big attraction at a Piedmont High School fundraiser this past weekend at Witter Field. For a $25 donation to PHS softball, participants took a live at-bat against either of the two pitching sensations in a first-ever Piedmont Hitting Challenge event. Duffy and Fong are two of the strongest pitchers in PHS softball history, having led Piedmont to the NCS Championship game last year. Both are headed for collegiate softball next year. The event provided participants with a full batting experience: an official plate umpire called ball and strikes; the rest of the PHS softball team played out in the field; and Duffy and Fong did not hold back with a wicked array of fastballs, rise balls and off-speed pitches. Participants randomly drew from a hat to determine which pitcher they would face. The event attracted a number of participants eager to test their hitting skills against the pair. PHS Principal Randall Booker, Piedmont Recreation Commissioner Bob McBain and Mulberrys Market General Manager David Crombie were some of the participants. Former collegiate baseball players and PHS parents Peter Craigie and John Thiele tried to see if baseball was transferable to fast pitch softball. In a dramatic family showdown, Denys Duffy batted against his own daughter, and struck out. Another prominent strikeout victim was PHS softball assistant coach Wayne Batavia. PHS Softball head coach Kristen Morley was pleased with the turnout and community support. This has never been done before, and Im thrilled to see so many come out and support the young women of the softball team and have great fun at the same time, she said. She also commented on the would-be hitters. Many of the male participants had played baseball in the past and were not accustomed to pitches that rise or drop dramatically. Also, the reaction time is the same as a major-league 90 mile-per-hour fastball. Most guys were not ready for that. Lack of readiness in the hitters showed. Of approximately 40 at-bats, about half struck out. The other half were mostly easy outs, and there only a handful were true base hits. Honors went to Piedmont Middle School teacher Tim Wisniewski, a former fast pitch softball player. He hit a towering home run in the left field trees on the very last at-bat of the event.
