The Cosmic Lounge presents Deep House Music: 'Let's Get...' by Metro Area. "Metro Area is Morgan Geist and Darshan Jesrani. After releasing a number of 12" EPs, they issued their first self-titled album (Metro Area) in 2002. The brainchild of veteran producers Morgan Geist and Darshan Jesrani, Metro Area was born out of the pair's somewhat dichotomous love for both the old moods of R&B, disco and boogie and the more cutting-edge sound of innovative house and techno. Metro Area brings back the soulful experimentation of the early club classics, mixing live and electronic instruments. Simultaneously, the mood and minimalism of more recent dance music forms creep into the mix: Detroit's cold futurism, Chicago's abstract track-modes, and the warmth of New York and New Jersey's deep house. After over a year of late-night sessions in New Jersey and Manhattan, Metro Area burst onto the scene in 1999 with their self-titled debut 12" featuring the cult smash "Atmosphrique." With an angular bassline underpinned by a grungy 4/4 disco beat and the most distinctive claps this side of 1977, "Atmosphrique" sounds futuristic and retro at the same time, and spawned myriad heated debates concerning the record's production date. Most of all, it left both DJs and dancers wanting more. However, the runaway success of Metro Area's MA 4 EP (released November 2001) surpassed all expectation, not least the duo's own. The feature track "Miura", a sinister, spare and pulsating antidote to the melancholic sweetness of their previous release, captured the imagination of a broad cross-section of DJs, dancers and listeners from almost every genre. Ubiquitously charted and still played with reverence today, "Miura" fueled sales of over 16,000 copies of the EP to date. It should be noted here that in keeping with Metro Area's low-profile tradition, not a single promo was mailed out to stimulate sales: the frenzy was created purely by word-of-mouth. Exactly a year after Metro Area 4, Metro Area's self-titled debut album finally emerged. Comprised of the strongest tracks from their 12" series plus 4 new tracks, the CD/LP elicited superlative responses from The New York Times to The Onion, from Web-logs to The Wire. Metro Area won a place among Rolling Stone's "Top 50 Albums of the 2002," a rock-and rap-dominated area most of today's dance music falls short of. Other accolades included BBC/Radio 1's "Dance Album of the Year" and the "Best New Artist" prize at the 2003 DanceStar/American Dance Awards. June 2004's MA5 and June 2005's MA6 EPs are already being touted as an extension of their sparkling tradition of redefining, refining and re-shaping their influences. The duo's remix of Hugh Masekela's "Mama" for Verve Remixed 2 was hailed as an elegant and innovative treatment of a classic recording, proving that Metro Area is more of an ethic than a production style and prompting Verve to release it and the original as its own 12" single. Besides their work in the studio, Metro Area have toured extensively, both together as a live PA and DJ team and separately as DJs, playing their distinct and individualistic style to crowds from Norway to South Africa. Currently staying busy with continued touring, solo remixes from Morgan and Darshan, new studios in Brooklyn, solo and side projects and the imminent release of a new Metro Area album, the music world can rest assured that Metro Area will continue to rock theories of time and space." http://www.last.fm/music/Metro+Area

The Cosmic Lounge presents Deep House Music: 'With You' by Aqua Bassino. "Edinburgh's Jason Robertson played bass for numerous jazz-funk bands before settling into the studio to focus on all things electronic. Settling on the Aqua Bassino moniker, he released his '96 debut EP, Swirl, on France's foremost electronic imprint, F Communications. Three more EPs followed (Deeper, Pools, and Waves) before Robertson released his '91 debut album, Beats 'n' Bobs. Skillfully blending elements of jazz, soul, and blues, the album features Scottish saxophonist Martin Kershaw, U.K. jazz singer of the year Niki King, and African diva Nahawa Doumbia, who has worked extensively with Frederic Galliano. "Baby C'Mon" was released as single in early '02 with remixes by deep house don Ron Trent and Detroit electro pioneer Soul Designer (Fabrice Lig). In his spare time, Robertson produces laid-back house and downtempo for Statra under his Jay Salino alias." http://www.last.fm/music/Aqua+Bassino

The Cosmic Lounge presents Deep House Music: 'Head Of House' by Glenn Underground. "Glenn Underground is the founding member of the Strictly Jaz Unit. He was raised on disco classics and freeform jazz in Chicago's Southside, the place where house music was born. Taking inspiration from Chicago's original pioneers, Larry Heard, Ron Hardy, Lil' Louis, and the like, Glenn has produced some of the most well respected deep house music of the past five years. His releases for Cajual, Prescription, Guidance and Peacefrog have set the standard for sophisticated dance music. He is one of the few DJ's who can walk the line between deep jazz house, disco influenced house, and the kind of classics featured at the legendary parties of late 70's Chicago." http://www.last.fm/music/Glenn+Underground

The Cosmic Lounge presents Deep House Music: 'Bleu' by King Kooba. "King Kooba, real names Matt Harris and Charlie Tate, are an electronica DJ duo from the United Kingdom. Legend says that they were formed over a pint of beer at Charlie's mum's pub in London, England. They are currently signed to the Om Records label, and have done work for many of their compilations, such as the Om Lounge series. Their style consists of a mixture of funk, soul, latin, jazz, and hip hop, with some electronic elements such as synthesizers and drum machines. Some of their music, such as the song "Blue Mosque", are influenced by Middle Eastern styles." http://www.last.fm/music/King+Kooba

The Cosmic Lounge presents Deep House Music: Def Jaguar's remix of 'Les Djinns' by Djuma Soundsystem. "Djuma Soundsystem is Norwegian Mikkas and Danish Lars B who both live in Copenhagen. They met first time when they DJed at one of Copenhagens longest running club nights, the Sunday club "Offline", and quickly became unseperable friends and production partners. Mikkas and Lars' producer career started in a for club music producers somewhat odd way; In 2001 they composed and produced the music for the ballet "Off The Record" for The Royal Danish Theatre in Copenhagen. A ballet that merged classical music with elements of new electronic genres. The story of Djuma Soundsystem began a couple of years later in 2003, when Mikkas and Lars B decided to make a tune under the following dogma: to make an ethnical sounding club banger, that wasn't cheesy!? Mikkas and Lars B has remixed, produced and coproduced tracks under many different monikers, such as Ben Horn and Def Jaguar. They have just finished remixing a track for Philipe Cohen Solal (Gotan Project) under their Ben Horn moniker, for his Moonshine sessions project on Ya Basta records and are releasing as Def Jaguar on Danish based label Big Star records and IO in UK. As DJs Lars and Mikkas has been playing for over a decade, all over Europe, and residencies includes Vega, Culture Box and Rust in Copenhagen. Their sound as producers is very varied, ranging from balearic disco vibes to straight up slammers, but always with a focus on grooves and recognicabel melody lines." http://www.last.fm/music/Djuma+Soundsystem

The Cosmic Lounge presents Deep House Music: 'Brothers Gonna Work It Out' by Blake Baxter. "Blake Baxter is often referred to as Detroit's unsung hero of the Detroit electronic music movement. He was there when the fuse was first lit. Blake Baxter is one of the leading figures of the House and Techno Underground Movement. As a DJ and producer, Blake was one of the first artists to have bridged the gap between the US and European club culture. Before there was Detroit Techno, there was Blake. Busy as a DJ and producer, you can find some of his earlier work on Chicago based record label DJ International Various Artist compilations titled Jack Master Vol. 2 and Jack Master Vol. 4." http://www.last.fm/music/Blake+Baxter

The Cosmic Lounge presents Deep House Music: 'Le Boom' by Justin Martin. "There's a new breed of house music bubbling under in a certain American city, but it's not coming out of Chicago or New York - this time it's from San Francisco. Claude VonStroke's 'Who's Afraid of Detroit?' was one of the biggest tracks of 2006 and the label it came out on is Dirtybird Records, the Bay Area brainchild of VonStroke and DJ/producer Justin Martin. VonStroke and Martin have been injecting avarian squelch, funk and swagger into the tech house template for just over a year now, but while VonStroke was 2006's unofficial best newcomer, don't be surprised if Martin doesn't fly the coop soon too. It might be a fresh sound, but Martin is not exactly a spring chicken. He's actually been releasing records since 2003 -- his first single was 'The Sad Piano' issued on Ben Watt's London label Buzzin' Fly. Its simplicity and groove made it a favourite of DJs along the lines of Derrick Carter, Pete Tong and Mark Farina, while Charles Webster's classic remix of the cut even found favour with the Germans, popping up on Steve Bug's 'Bugnology'. Since then Martin has racked up two more twelves on Buzzin' Fly and a couple of jacking house tracks and remixes on labels such as Classic and Freerange. He also promises an artist album in 2007. While San Francisco might not thought be thought of as a dance hotbed, there's always been enough going on to turn the most curious heads onto the culture. The early drum n bass scene turned Martin away from jazz and hip hop and onto the rave culture of the nineties, a short sharp shock which inspired him to take up DJing and producing. But the truth is Martin had always been musical -- as a child he studied the saxophone and classical piano, a musicality which shows in both his productions and DJ sets. "Justin started playing the pots and pans at the age of 2," his MySpace puts it. "Now he is a DJ." Martin's rise has been prominent enough to even make an older tradition of West Coast house take notice. He's also a new face on Om Records, home to big West Coast househeads such as Miguel Migs, Andy Caldwell and Fred Everything. Martin's remix of Iz & Diz's 'Magnificent' is pretty slamming, and the label has also chosen him to mix a volume in their latest compilation series 'Om: Winter Sessions', on which he spins tracks and remixes from Switch, Jesse Rose, and Phonique. Not exactly a typical Om sound, but it's nice to see San Francisco moving forward." http://www.last.fm/music/Justin+Martin

The Cosmic Lounge presents Deep House Music: 'The Spot' by Franck Roger. "DJ since 13 years now and producer since 7 years Franck Roger has fully understood that making music and spread worldwide the House Music message is the most important thing in his life... Indeed, Franck has multiplied the releases on labels as prestigious and well respected on the international scene as Kenlou (Kenny Dope and Louie Vega / USA) Versatile (Dj Gilb'r / France), Crash (Dino & Terry / Canada), Flowers (Japan), Needs (Germany), BBE (UK), Defected rds, Sole Channel, King Street,Especial (Japan), Spacekat (UK). Without a doubt Franck is the DJ & producer the most 'in view'. Influenced by artists such as Stevie Wonder, Vince Montana, Mongo Santamaria and Blaze... Franck has developed a true quality house sound with many faces (house, deep, dubby, spiritual, broken and soulful house productions...) By producing his first single, the Straight Up label (Playing For the City) opened the doors for their young protégé, to the Parisian deep house scene. Since then Franck has worked closely with quality musicians such as Olivier M'selem (on keyboards) and more recently Gene Perez and Mike Ciro from Masters At Work and the multi talented singer, Chris Wonder, with whom he produces the majority of his songs. With strong support from abroad (Little Louie Vega, Frankie Feliciano, DJ Spinna, Osunlade, Kerri Chandler, Dennis Ferrer and many more) Franck can prepare his future productions by exploring different horizons open to him and by collaborating with contemporary artists such as Alix Alvarez, Arnold Jarvis, Osunlade, DJ Spinna and for 2006 some collaborations with Mr V and Jovonn for Real Tone Records that is his own label since 2004 with his partner Lionel Marciano. Franck released in February 2006 his new album featuring 12 new tracks on Seasons Records (USA) that's is already licensed on P VINE rds for the Japan market and also in South Africa also followed with a world-wide tour in 2006 in USA , Europe and Japan and abroad in order to express, live, the love he holds for music, as he has previously done the world over (Paris, NYC, LA, Miami, London, Tokyo, Johannesburg... Many news and surprises are coming soon from this unstopable DJ & producer..." http://www.last.fm/music/Franck+Roger

The Cosmic Lounge presents Deep House Music: 'Sucre' by John Tejada. "Los Angeles DJ and producer Tejada has been releasing minimal techno since the early '90s, often finding himself lumped alongside Detroit techno maverick Matthew Dear. These days, expanding on his formidable resume, Tejada creates ethereal electronic jangle and harmonies (think Depeche Mode dream pop and the classic songwriting of Johnny Marr) that complement each other and offer a good reason for living. California-based John Tejada is easily one of the most productive DJ/producers in modern dance music. While most of his colleagues work on establishing a signature sound within one specific genre, John Tejada works in all genres simultaneously. Whether house, techno, electronica or drum & bass, every scene gets something from this multitalent, and Tejada manages to move within each field as if it were his own. Recently he surprised everyone by revealing yet another facet to his already impressive ability: he released an album on the Berlin label City Centre Offices with Japanese guitarist Takeshi Nishimoto, under the project name "I'm Not a Gun". The album impressively demonstrated that Tejada can make a place for himself in post-rock circles as well, mixing electronic and acoustic sounds in the Tortoise tradition." http://www.last.fm/music/John+Tejada
