The program considers the history, suffering and present day revival of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church. With unique archive material sourced from the Russian State Television, the documentary considers the early Greek Catholic Church, reviewing how at the Pseudo-Synod of 1946, the Greek Catholic Church was officially dissolved with its Churches and liturgical treasures handed over the Orthodox Church in Ukraine. Later these images reveal how, at the height of Soviet persecution, these Churches, including Orthodox Churches were destroyed. The dramatic human suffering is also revealed; particularly how 6 million Ukrainians were starved to death during Stalin's "Ukrainian Holocaust". The story is one of courage and hope, showing how Ukrainian Greek Catholics, having never accepted the dissolution of their Church, went underground and risked their lives to save the Church treasures from being destroyed. The documentary then considers the struggle to legitimise the Church and finally, through hunger strikes and appeals, the success in achieving this goal of the official recognition of the Greek Catholic Church.
