New laws aimed at curbing illegal migration in the Caribbean have left thousands of first generation Dominicans unable to work, study or travel. Authorities there in charge of issuing documents no longer recognise them as citizens ... even though the Constitution does. Many say it is because of the colour of their skin. In the first part of our series on race and racism in Latin America, Al Jazeera's Lucia Newman reports from the Dominican Republic.

Michael Greiner, a neighbor and good friend, asked me to upload several Marimba videos for him (that's him on the left in the middle row). He currently teaches in the after school music program 'Smile A While' at Aveson Charter School http://aveson.org/ and constructs musical instruments in classes with students' participation. Michael Greiner created this set of plastic pipe marimbas. On this clip are three generations of prototypes designed to be low cost for use by childrens' programming. The middle row were built with the help of the music class (the performers in this video) The top one (bass version) costs around $200 in materials. The mallets are home made using foam flip-flops mounted to paint stirring sticks. The music is a Michael Greiner original titled Caribbean Fantasy. This recording was of a practice during the school year. The performers had about 4 months practice with this piece along with 12 Bar Blues, Ice Cream, a piece played on Wine Glasses and the Ukrainian Carol (Carol of the Bells) played on another created metal instrument. A family vacation aboard Princess Cruises Caribbean Princess. This is one of Princess' newest ships, built in 2004 in Italy, and loaded with amenities. Also seen are the Carnival Triumph in Sint Maarten, and the Holland America Westerdam in St. Thomas. It was a very enjoyable trip, and I hope to do it again sometime.

April 1999 With the future of the banana business in jeopardy, Caribbean farmers are turning to marijuana production. Nebo was a banana farmer prepared for the WTO's damming decision. "The more the decline in the banana, the more the production of marijuana. Where there is a market I will plant." And at 2000ft up, away from the gaze of police, the holy herb is flourishing. The hardy marijuana rastas, tending these crops earn 10 to 20 times as much as banana farmers. Tipping up a fertilizer bucket of compressed ganja Bungo proudly displays his cannabis castle worth $20,000. It's a risky business though for not only are the US squeezing the banana industry, they are at the forefront of a Caribbean drugs crackdown. Last December US marines descended from the skies in a wave of helicopter attacks on the illegal ganja fields. They say they destroyed over a million plants. The growers though are unrepentant: "We are concerned about drugs like you are. But you can't expect us to be giving everything and getting nothing in return."
