Billie Holiday (1915-1959) is considered one of the greatest jazz voices of all time. She had a very difficult life which greatly affected her music. Jack Kerouac pictured this song in his book "on the road" as followings: "...I huddled in the cold, rainy wind and watched everything across the sad vineyards of October in the valley. My mind was filled with that great song... It's not the words so much as the great harmonic tune and the way Billie sings it, like a woman stroking her man's hair in soft lamp-light. The winds howled. I got cold..." I also have the Lena Horne version on a 78 that I play on my 1917 Victor Victrola. All verions are beautiful in their own way but no one creates a mood like Lady Day.

It's a fragment of the film "New Orleans", directed by Arthur Lubin in 1947. This is the saddest part of the film, in my opinion, because everybody is obliged to leave the city they learnt to call a home and that's what this song tell us about.
