Joseph Muscat embraces George Abela
Less than a week after he was elected Labour leader, Dr Joseph Muscat on Thursday met Dom Mintoff, the former Labour leader and Prime Minister of Malta, and welcomed back Dr George Abela, the other candidate in Friday's leadership election, at the National Labour Headquarters.
Dr George Abela unexpectedly turned up at the Labour Headquarters at the beginning of the extraordinary general conference convened to elect the two deputy leaders of the party. As Dr Muscat welcomed the seven candidates vying for the two deputy leadership posts, he also announced Dr Abela's presence at the conference. As the Labour delegates present greeted Dr Abela with an applause, Dr Muscat invited him on stage. After embracing each other, the two turned to salute the audience.
At the really, Dr Muscat immediately made it clear that he wanted Dr Abela to have a central role within the party -- "George Abela's role in the party is not over... It is yet to start."
