The National Center for Korean Traditional Performing Arts 국립국악원 Geomungo 거문고 sanjo 산조 demonstration at foreigner's traditional music class completion concert.
geomungo is a korean 6 string zither - different from the gayageum - which has 12 strings. gayageum uses the finger to pluck and flick strings, while the geomungo uses a short bamboo stick to pluck the strings. 3 of the strings are un-fretted on movable bridges to keep a constant tuning, the other 3 strings are over 16 frets. the strings are silk, like with gayageum - but thicker. while the fretted strings may seem similar to a guitar, the silk strings allow a lot of note bending on the fret - making a unique korean sound.
